Youth Academy: Leadership for Democracy and Development
About this event: Youth Academy

Text of a Statement Delivered at the June 30 Press Conference by the Ken Nnamani Centre for Leadership and Development (KNCLD) to launch its Youth Academy at the Centre’s Office in Abuja

This Saturday, the fourth of July, the Ken Nnamani Center for Leadership and Development will inaugurate the first session of its Youth Academy. The Academy, which will run for eight consecutive weeks, will be a Saturday program. We are limiting the program to Saturdays in order to give opportunity to students and those who hold regular jobs to attend the Academy.

We have invited the Minister of Youth and Social Development to declare the Academy open . The Academy will be a mixture of formal instruction and practical exercises on issues ranging from citizenship, electoral reform governance, and economic growth and development. The Centre has distinguished civil society leaders, development practitioners and public officials who have offered their time and resources to counsel and share experiences that can inspire these youths to creativity, innovation and transformative action. Senator Joy Emodi, Chair, Senate Committee on Education; Professor Julius Ihonvbere President Obasanjo’s policy adviser and Dr. Osita Ogbu, former Economic Adviser to the President, have accepted to be panelists for a discussion on leadership for the Academy’s opening day. During the course of the eight weeks, representatives of the World Bank, the UNDP and the DFID and accomplished private sector innovators will also instruct Academy’s participants in their various fields of expertise.

The Youth Academy is launched as part of the mission of the Ken Nnamani Center to promote economic prosperity, democratic governance and political stability in Nigeria. The Youth Academy is conceived as a special facility for the training of young people to become leaders who can transform their society.

The Centre’s focus on engendering transformative leadership through research, training and advocacy underlines the recognition that transformative leadership is one critical ingredient missing in our quest for economic and political development. We recognize that without transformative leadership, Nigeria will not achieve its national development priorities. The problem of leadership cannot be left solely for elected officials. Civic responsibility is an essential component of national leadership.

In keeping with our Centre’s belief in the capacity of young people to play importance roles in economic and social development through creative thought, critical analysis and effective action, the Centre will, in the near future, embark on a series of interventions, in addition to the Academy, on youth leadership development, including mentoring and training. These interventions will aim at enhancing the life-skills and leadership capabilities of Nigerian youth in order to make them good citizens and transformative leaders today so they can better manage the challenges of tomorrow.

According to the UN Millennium Development Goals Report 2008, gaps remain in the
realization of the MDGs.

Global challenges require a global and concerted action involving all actors. Each citizen
can play a key part. In short, it is crucial that we work together in order to achieve synergy
(i.e. the whole impact of partnership is greater than the sum of its parts).

The United Actions project has been launched to mobilize local, national and global
efforts towards the achievement of the MDGs. The UA project inspires and empowers
people across the globe to take personal responsibility, to use their true potential and to
take action and make a positive impact on local/global communities.

Core objectives:
• Build a global human network to mobilize a global and concerted action to
achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015;
• Realize the human potential for entrepreneurship; innovations and practical
solutions for sustainable development across the globe;
• Accelerate the progress on building a long-term global partnership for
development to respond to the social and environmental challenges of our time.

United Actions uses the powerful tool of Information and Communication Technologies
(ICT) to create a global platform where people can exchange information, knowledge
and ideas. UA engages people in a global network and foster cross-cultural dialogue in
order to enhance understanding and international cooperation.

The UA Ambassadors are located worldwide and raise awareness on the MDGs,
mentor people in their communities and spread the UA project anywhere they can.
They gather together people’s different talents, skills and experiences, who can,
together, build workable solutions.

UA organises free workshops worldwide and provide free toolkits to participants in order
to realize potential and encourage entrepreneurship and to support them to turn their
ideas into actions.

UA continuously exploits new opportunities to generate practical solutions to support the
realization of the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.
Don’t wait for solutions; create them.
• How can you make a difference in your local/global communities?
• How can you transform your ideas into actions?
• Will you use your potential to make a positive impact on the world?

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY WITH GLOBAL XCHANGE VOLUNTEERS
Related to country: Nigeria
About this category: Education

The Global Xchange volunteers with support from the Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and the British Council on 11th – 12th August 2008 organised a 2-day event to celebrate the International Youth Day (IYD) as well as to take action on Climate Change.

The theme of this year’s IYD was “Youth & Climate Change: Time for Action”. The event was well represented by youth drawn from the six geo-political zones of Nigeria and the Global Xchange Volunteers. The first day of the event was a sensitization forum where the youth had the opportunity to increase their knowledge on Climate Change and the causes of global warming. Mr. Taiwo Adewole a consultant from Sustainable Energy, Lagos gave a detailed presentation on “Climate Change: Youth Call to Action on Environmental Sustainability”. This session gave the participants an opportunity to a better understanding to Climate Change and Global Warming. Mr. Joe Adusei of United Nations Volunteers did a presentation on “Volunteering as a means to mitigating the impact of Climate Change”.

The day 2 of the event was an outdoor event where the youth went out to the streets and parks of Abuja to sensitise the people on Climate Change, the human contributions to Global Warming, how to recycling as well as take personal responsibility in mitigating these actions. The youth also undertook some actions by cleaning up some of these parks which had some waste littered around the environments.

After the outdoor event there was a debriefing session where the youth involved in this activities shared their experiences on the outdoor activity while out in the streets and parks of Abuja.

At the end the day 2 event, the youth were not just better informed but geared up to take personal responsibility and action towards mitigating those personal actions that also contributed to the effects of Climate Change. A communiqué was drafted and the final version will be sent to the Federal, State, Local Government, leaders and policy makers to call them to action to initiate policies and practices that will guard the citizens and bring into consciousness the need for the involvement of the citizenry to this cause as well as ensure the implementation of existing environmental policies.

Volunteerism: Tapping into Nigeria’s Human Resources.
Related to country: Nigeria
About this category: Education

Everyday we consciously or ‘unconsciously’ volunteer. You would ask, why the word ‘unconsciously’? Nigeria is one great country still developing in terms of volunteerism with about 70% population, inspite of their involvement in one form of volunteering or the other, fail to neither recognize it nor understand the concept of volunteerism.

Nigeria is delimited with challenges such as Poverty, Poor access to quality education, unemployment and lack of basic health facilities. However, in our limitation lie our strengths and opportunities to tap into our vibrant human resources available at our disposal.

About 5.8% of the Nigerian labour force is currently unemployed which has translated into increased poverty in the lives of the people. The question now is; how can Nigeria strategically utilize her human resources to better her economy and improve the standard of living of her citizenry?

Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) has demonstrated that volunteerism is a strategic tool for improving standard of living, strengthening educational delivery systems and effectively responding to HIV/AIDS scourge.

With 50 years experience in Nigeria delivering services through her international volunteers and partners for the development in our educational sector, health and the supporting of income generating activities in securing the livelihood of the people, shows that Nigeria can thrive in development challenges if we are committed to what we call our own and investing our skills for a positive change.

Arising to her responsibility through the active involvement of government, public, private and civil society sectors, Nigeria can adopt volunteering as one of the tools to tackling unemployment, poverty, health lapses and social vices. The culture of civic responsibility and patriotism needs to be imbibed for a successful application of this tool to effectively intervene in terms of service delivery and for economic growth.

Our human resources should not be allowed to wallow in ignorance and abject poverty in queue for when over-populated labour market will manifest with job opportunities. Individuals can be better productive if there is increase in sensitization on volunteerism as well as active involvement of the government.
Just like our tapped petroleum resources, let us arise today and explore our untapped human resources for volunteerism and for our development.

Vous parlez Francais? (Do you speak French?)
About this category: Education

I have always loved languages and wish I can speak as much languages as possible. Although English is our official language in Nigeria, we have 3 main ethnic languages which are Ibo, Yoruba and Hausa. Fortunately, I speak 2 out of the 3. The first, Ibo, which is my mother tongue and then Yoruba, which I was privileged to grow up with having been born and lived in the south-western part of the country most of my years.

I am currently learning to speak Hausa and have also have realized that I have more task ahead…which is, learning to speak French! While in secondary school, I dropped French out of my chosen subjects because my teacher at that time was very strict and for this reason, the French students were very few as many students wouldn’t choose French as a subject. I had regrets at the end of the day because I lost that opportunity!

I have just returned from the Republic of Benin and Togo where French is their official languages and have come to realize that it absolutely pays to be at least bi-lingual.
My stay in these countries in the course of my visit was very interesting! I didn’t speak their language, and only very few of them could speak mine (English). Luckily for me, my friend who I traveled with is got French skills so she did all the rescuing in times of translation and negotiation!

While in Togo, I met some Nigerians who traveled all the way to the University of Lome to study the language and some exchange students which I found really fascinating!
I am happily learning to speak French, and I encourage you out there to make it a point of duty to learn other languages besides your country’s official Language…as you would one day find it useful.
As a Global Citizen, what more can I say than…Il faut apprendre francais. A tout a l’ heures!!

Xabbel:Searching the Web and Changing the World!
About this category: Technology

Hello Everyone,i want to introduce you all to this wonderfull Change Making Project.I call it the search engine with a human face. After reading this, i am sure you will make Xabbel your Number 1 search engine!

About Xabbel

Xabbel is a normal search engine like any other search engine. It gives the same output as the other search engines, the special thing about it is that we donate 100% of our earnings to social projects.

The Xabbel search are run by a German charity foundation which is, according to German law, not allowed to make any profits. The organization was founded by the German Christian Kroll, but nowadays there are also many other helpers working for Xabbel.

We want to make sure that the money we earn really goes to the people who need it desperately. Unfortunately this is not so easy. Wherever there is money, there is also a lot of corruption and nepotism going on. To make sure that the money goes to the right pockets, we constantly monitor the projects we finance.

We are exclusively investing into projects which are sustainable, transparent and politically independent. The projects we support have to serve one of these purposes:

* Education
* Development aid
* Equality of rights
* Health care
* Environmental and animal protection
* Promotion of human rights

Because of the fact, that we have not earned so much money yet we are currently financing only a few small projects.

So how you can help Xabbel is, the more people use Xabbel as their search engine, the more money we earn. Hence YOU can help us a lot by simply telling your friends about Xabbel. So please spread the word.

Projects that we are currently engaged in:

1.Medication for Rudra Prasad Amagain
2.Support For Woman Education Center
3.School Fee For Sonam
4.Surgery Of Anita Shrestha

Goldman Sachs Launches $100 Million Initiative to Teach Business to Women in Developing World
About this category: Globalization

The Goldman Sachs Group (http://www2.goldmansachs.com/ ) has announced a five-year, $100 million initiative (10,000 women) to provide ten thousand underserved women — predominantly in developing and emerging areas of the world — with a business and management education.

Through partnerships between universities in the United States and Europe and business schools in emerging and developing countries, the 10,000 Women initiative is designed to help dis advantaged women earn business and management certificates.

The partnerships will support flexible, short-term programs for women whose financial and practical circumstances prevent them from receiving a traditional business education. A select number of MBA and BA degrees will also be conferred.

In addition to funding tuition for business and management edu cation, 10,000 Women will work with development organizations to better understand the local challenges girls and young women must overcome in order to realize economic opportunity and achieve their full potential. The initiative will also focus on building capacity by developing curricula, creating local case study models, improving the level of faculty training and exper- tise, and training faculty.

The initiative, which has been in development for more than a year, was inspired by economic research from Goldman Sachs that showed the powerful effects of greater labor force participation of women on economies and societies. In coming months, the firm plans to announce additional partnerships that will provide more business and management education for disadvantaged women in the United States.

“Those of us who champion open markets must also do our part to create more opportunity to ensure economic growth is more broadly shared,” said Goldman Sachs chairman and CEO Lloyd C. Blankfein.

“10,000 Women focuses on a critical, yet often overlooked area where we believe Goldman Sachs can use its resources and conven- ing power to help build the foundation to expand the ranks of businesswomen, managers, and entrepreneurs around the world.”

What is 10,000 Women?

Expanding the entrepreneurial talent and managerial pool in developing and emerging economies – especially among women – is one of the most important means to reducing inequality and ensuring more shared economic growth.

Launched by Goldman Sachs, 10,000 Women is a global initiative that will:

* Increase the number of underserved women receiving a business and management education
* Improve the quality and capacity of business and management education around the world

10,000 Women has six components:

* 10,000 Women Over Five Years Will Receive a Business and Management Education: Over the next five years, Goldman Sachs will support partnerships with universities and development organizations that will lead to 10,000 women receiving a business and management education. The initial partnerships will fund business and management education certificates in countries around the world. These innovative certificate programs are pragmatic, flexible and shorter term and will help open doors for thousands of women whose financial and practical circumstances prevent them from ever receiving a traditional business education. These programs will provide women with the opportunity to develop specific skills, such as drafting a business plan, accounting, public speaking, marketing, management and accessing capital. There will also be a select number of MBA and BA scholarships funded.

* Build Quality and Capacity Through Global Business Sister School Partnerships: To strengthen the quality and capacity of business schools in developing nations, Goldman Sachs will support new partnerships between business schools and universities in the United States and Europe and business schools in developing and emerging economies. Through these partnerships, the schools will collaborate to train professors, exchange faculty, develop curriculum and create local case study material.

* Establish Mentoring and Post-Graduation Support for Women Entrepreneurs: In addition to funding tuition for business and management education, 10,000 Women will seek to establish mentoring and networking channels for women and to encourage career development opportunities that will extend the benefits of the program beyond the classroom, leveraging the overall impact of their educational experience.

* Work with Leading Research and Women’s Development Organizations: Many outstanding organizations are working on the ground to give girls, young women and potential entrepreneurs a sense of their future potential. 10,000 Women will work with these organizations to better understand the local challenges these girls and women must overcome so more of them can ultimately realize their potential through access to greater economic opportunity.

* Develop Partnerships in the United States to Help Disadvantaged Women: As part of 10,000 Women, Goldman Sachs will establish parallel programs and partnerships to provide more business and management education for disadvantaged women in the United States.

* Commit $100 Million in Addition to the Time and Dedication of Goldman Sachs People: Goldman Sachs will commit $100 million over the next five years to 10,000 Women. In addition, the people of Goldman Sachs will contribute their time and expertise through classroom instruction and mentoring.
